Raymond C. Jahrling began his 'hands-on' plastic artificial eye making apprenticeship (1949) with Mager & Gougelmann, Inc. in Chicago, Illinois.  This was followed by a 10 year ophthalmic plastic research project with Dr. Wm. Stone, Jr. at the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary in 1953.  In 1962, he established in own laboratory and became involved in the American Society of Ocularists, and by 1973 received a Master in Ophthalmic Prosthetics from ASO (when they were the certifying body).  He had also served on the ASO Board of Directors, and was on their teaching staff.  (Refer to Publications) He is a BCO and continues his CE credits to update his NEBO registration and recertification.

Notable Achievements

1978

Recognized as an ASO Fellow
 

1980 - 1992

As a board member, helped to establish the National Examining Board of Ocularists.  Co-chaired the Committees for the preparation of the Written and Hands-on Four-part Certification Examination.
 

1981

Gave the Ruedemann Lecture at the Joint Meeting of the ASO and AAO.
 

1986

Recipient of Honorary Status in ASO
 

1990

Received the Lee Allen Award for Excellence in Ocularistry.
 

1992

Recipient of Honorary Status in NEBO
 

1998

Wrote the Issue Highlight article for the Journal of the American Optometric Association for June 1998, and
 

1999

Wrote the Chapter entitled The Role of the Ocularist in Dr. Michael Migliori's book Enucleation, Evisceration and Evisceration.
